Much of the Pinot Noir poured in Stellenbosch is grown further south, in cooler Elgin and the Hemel-en-Aarde.

Pinotage was bred at Stellenbosch University in 1925, and its first four seedlings were nearly lost in a garden clean-up.
Style
Blends
Nico Myburgh visited Bordeaux, decided its climate was like Stellenbosch's, and made Meerlust's first Rubicon in 1980. Blends here still tend to go by a name, not a grape.
