The story
About the Jonkershoek Valley
The mountain catchment above Jonkershoek's vineyards gets some of the highest rainfall in South Africa.
Jonkershoek Valley is a Wine of Origin ward of the Stellenbosch district, the valley that runs east from town into the mountains. It is a narrow, wet, mountain-walled place, and the three estates on our list farm it in very different ways.
A valley with a river at its head
The Eerste River is the only river that flows through the valley, and it rises in the mountain catchment above the vineyards. CapeNature notes that the steep terrain gives the catchment some of the highest rainfall in South Africa, and the summer southeaster blows hard down the valley.
That is the setting the wineries describe. Stark-Condé talks of ample winter rain and the southeaster moving through its vines, and Lanzerac's vineyards climb from about 160 to 500 metres under the Botmaskop foothills. The upper valley is protected mountain land, so the vineyards stop where the fynbos takes over.
