Curious about Stellenbosch?
Short, sourced stories on the grapes, valleys and labels you will meet on a tasting day.
Grape
Chenin Blanc
For three centuries South Africans called it Steen, until a Stellenbosch professor showed in 1963 that it was the Loire's Chenin Blanc.
Chenin Blanc is South Africa's most widely planted grape and its signature white, and Stellenbosch makes it in every register: fresh and unoaked, barrel-fermented, from old bush vines, skin-contact and even sweet. One grape, a whole tasting flight.
Area
Banghoek means 'the scary corner', after the lions, leopards and elephants early travellers met coming over the pass.
Theme
In South Africa a vine counts as old at 35, and a seal on the bottle can tell you the year it was planted.
Grape
Pinotage was bred at Stellenbosch University in 1925, and its first four seedlings were nearly lost in a garden clean-up.
Style
South African bottle-fermented sparkling wine began in Stellenbosch, with Simonsig's Kaapse Vonkel in 1971.

Pick an area
Stellenbosch is a patchwork of valleys and slopes. Staying in one cuts the driving, and each area page suggests a day.

- 3 estatesThe Devon ValleyClos Malverne, in this small valley, was among the first estates to bottle a Cape Blend, in 1995.
- 3 estatesThe Jonkershoek ValleyThe mountain catchment above Jonkershoek's vineyards gets some of the highest rainfall in South Africa.
- 4 estatesThe Polkadraai HillsWhen Bruwer Raats bought his farm here in 2005, he says it was the cheapest land in Stellenbosch.
