The story

About the Polkadraai Hills

When Bruwer Raats bought his farm here in 2005, he says it was the cheapest land in Stellenbosch.

The Polkadraai Hills are a Wine of Origin ward on the western side of the Stellenbosch district, low granite hills along the Polkadraai Road (M12) towards Cape Town. They are known for Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc, and for a run of small producers who put the ward name on the label.

Granite, and the sea in view

This side of Stellenbosch faces the ocean. Reyneke's farm looks out over Stellenbosch and False Bay, and the Stellenbosch Wine Routes describe these western vineyards as first in line for the cooling sea breezes.

The soils are granitic, which the writer Tim James credits for the brightness of the wines here. When Bruwer Raats bought his farm in 2005, he says it was the cheapest land in Stellenbosch. He went on to help establish the ward, and his Chenins now name Polkadraai Hills as their origin.

About the Polkadraai Hills

Four estates on our list

Raats concentrates on Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc, from the Old Vine Chenin to the Eden High Density bottlings. Tastings are in a private room on Eden Farm and must be booked.

Reyneke farms biodynamically and holds organic certification through Ecocert. Tastings are by appointment.

De Toren Private Cellar works about 22ha and is built around Bordeaux-style reds such as Fusion V, from what it describes as South Africa's first gravity-fed cellar. The premium tasting takes walk-ins; the underground tasting room needs a booking.

Catherine Marshall began with a three-barrel foot-stomp on a beach in 1996 and a Pinot Noir micro-winery in 1997. It now works from the hill cellar that was once Amani's, with the tasting room at Lavinia, 1377 Polkadraai Road, open weekdays from 10:00 to 16:00.
