The story
Viognier in Stellenbosch
A small share of Viognier in a Shiraz blend lifts the red's aroma, a habit borrowed from the northern Rhône.
Viognier is a small grape in South Africa, with about 639 hectares, and in Stellenbosch only a few estates take it seriously. Expect a full, perfumed white with apricot and blossom, and a supporting role in Shiraz blends.
A Rhône grape that nearly vanished
Viognier comes from the northern Rhône, where Condrieu is its home. In the second half of the 20th century it came close to disappearing there, then spread around the world.
In South Africa it remains a niche: 639 hectares at the end of 2023, the 18th most planted variety. The appeal is perfume and body. The difficulty is the same thing, since a heavy hand gives a wine that is more aroma than refreshment.
