The story

Shiraz in Stellenbosch

Shiraz or Syrah? Same grape. The name on the label hints at the style, but there is no rule.

Shiraz, also labelled Syrah, is South Africa's second most planted red grape after Cabernet Sauvignon, and Stellenbosch has about 1,800 hectares of it. Expect dark fruit and spice, leaner and peppery from cooler, higher sites and fuller and riper from warmer ones.

Shiraz or Syrah

Same grape, two names. The Cape called it Shiraz for decades, and Bellingham bottled the country's first varietal Shiraz in 1957. Stellenzicht in Stellenbosch released the first varietal Syrah in 1994.

The word on the label is a hint at style, not a rule. Syrah tends to signal a more restrained, Rhône-leaning wine and Shiraz a riper one, but cellars use both freely, and some estates on this list put both names on different bottlings.

Where it grows in Stellenbosch

Wines of South Africa counts 1,826 hectares of Shiraz in Stellenbosch, with the biggest concentration in the Bottelary Hills ward to the north-west of town. Hartenberg and Groenland both farm there, and Hartenberg's range shows the other local habit: Shiraz blended with Cabernet Sauvignon.

Elevation and aspect do much of the rest. On the slopes of the Helderberg, Rust en Vrede makes a Single Vineyard Shiraz alongside its estate Syrah.

Comparing bottles in one tasting

Several estates here make more than one, which is the quickest way to see what site does to the grape. Keermont makes a Steepside Syrah and a Topside Syrah next to its estate Syrah. De Trafford makes Syrah Blueprint and Syrah 393, and Kleinood bottles its Syrah under the Tamboerskloof name.
